Solar carport cost: what really drives the price
Price per watt does not tell the whole story. On a car park, cost sits under the panels as much as on top: structure, foundations, utilities and days on site.

Cost items
| Item | What makes it vary |
|---|---|
| Modules and inverters | Market prices, installed capacity, equipment origin |
| Structure | Span, snow and wind loads, material, clear height |
| Foundations and civil works | Support count, ground conditions, utilities to divert, resurfacing |
| Grid connection | Distance to substation, capacity, possible grid reinforcement |
| Studies and permits | Geotechnics, structural analysis, planning files |
| Operational impact | Spaces closed, works duration, phasing, safety |
Why €/Wp is misleading
Comparing two bids per watt often means comparing panels. Yet for the same capacity, two structures can need very different numbers of foundations, works durations and lost spaces. The right metric is installed and operated cost: investment, schedule, site disruption and the ability to repeat the solution across several car parks.
Levers to reduce cost
- Fewer supports: every foundation avoided cuts civil works and utility risk.
- Prefabrication: work done in the factory is faster, safer and better controlled than on site.
- Standardisation: a module repeated across sites amortises engineering and moulds.
- Early design: knowing the ground and utilities early avoids costly redesigns.
- Use value: charging, self-consumption and shade create income or savings beyond electricity sales.
Financing a solar carport
Three main models coexist. The owner can invest directly and consume or sell the electricity. A third-party investor can finance, build and operate in exchange for rent or a right of occupation. Or the owner can sign a power purchase agreement (PPA) with a producer.
A demountable, redeployable structure opens a fourth route: generating value from land over a shorter period than the usual 20 to 30 years, for example a concession of a few years.
Where SUUN acts on cost
SUUN works on structure, foundations and works: 30 m spans, uncoated UHPFRC pillars, a superstructure pre-assembled and transported folded. Our engineering targets are presented as targets and will be confirmed on the first sites. Ask for a first estimate for your site.
Frequently asked questions
What is the price per m²?
It depends mostly on span, climate loads, ground and support count. A serious estimate starts from the car park plan and a first geotechnical assumption.
After panels, what costs the most?
On an existing car park, structure and foundations with their civil works account for a large share of the investment. That is where long spans help.
