Connecting a solar carport to the grid
Grid connection is often the critical path of a carport project. Well prepared, it runs in parallel with permits; improvised, it can delay commissioning by months.

The steps
- Capacity study: available power at the existing delivery point or nearest substation.
- Connection request to the distribution network operator (Enedis across most of France, a local utility elsewhere).
- Technical and financial offer: chosen solution, cost, timeline; accepting it reserves capacity.
- Works by the operator and the producer.
- Commissioning after compliance checks.
Self-consumption or export: a weighty choice
With self-consumption, the carport often connects behind the site’s existing delivery point, which can make connection simpler and faster. With full export, a dedicated point is created. Above a given capacity threshold, a regional share linked to the French renewable connection scheme (S3REnR) is added. See our self-consumption guide.
Anticipating timelines
- File the request as soon as layout and capacity are stable.
- Locate the technical room (inverters, switchboards) close to the connection point early.
- Include connection trenches in the works phasing.
- Include EV charging in the requested capacity if planned.
At SUUN
The SUUN structure integrates cable routes along beams and supports: fewer trenches under the asphalt and shorter electrical works. Discuss your project.
Frequently asked questions
Who pays for connection?
The producer, per the operator’s technical and financial offer, plus the regional share where applicable.
Can works start before connection?
Yes, the structure can be built first; generation starts only after commissioning.
