Regulation

Solar carports, rainwater and car park greening

A solarised car park can also handle water better and host more planting. Recent French rules encourage combining the two.

Where does the rain go?

A carport concentrates rain at its edges or into downpipes. Well designed, it can send water to swales, planted strips or permeable surfaces instead of the sewer. It is also a chance to reduce the car park’s sealed area.

What the rules say

New or refurbished car parks in France must meet shading and rainwater requirements, and the November 2025 planning simplification law allows, under conditions, solar canopies to be combined with tree shading for the APER obligation. Local plans may also require unsealed ground ratios. See the APER guide.

Trees and panels: living together

  • Keep planted islands where supports are not needed.
  • Avoid tree shade on panels, allowing for growth.
  • Protect roots during foundation works.
  • Choose the watertight option if full shelter is wanted.

At SUUN

With two supports every 30 m, the car park floor stays largely free: more room for planted islands and swales, fewer foundations in green areas. Discuss your site.

Frequently asked questions

Is a carport watertight?

A roof of panels lets some water through between modules. Suun Light’s 100% watertight option provides full shelter.

Can trees replace part of the canopies?

Under conditions, since the November 2025 law in France. Check the exact rules at project time.
